"Remembering John Wayne, My Hero" posted by ~Ray

Some months back I went into my studio and recorded this dedication segment to my hero. John Wayne entitled “For What It’s Worth.” To me. John Wayne had a deep love for his country. His patriotism is reflected throughout his entire life. He had wanted to go into the military but an old football injury prevented it. He is quoted as saying “More than anything else. I wanted to go to Annapolis and become an officer in the Navy. It was a terrible disappointment when I didn’t make it.” The American public may have lost the chance at a great officer but John Wayne never failed us. He worked closely with the USO in supporting the U. S. Troops from World War II through to Vietnam. His personal visits cheered and encouraged many a young service man. I too was caught up in this and John Wayne’s example was one of the main reasons I decided to enlist in the Air Force and volunteered for three straight tours in Vietnam. “Duke” a name he was affectionately known as by millions of soldiers wore Capt. Stephen P. Hanson’s POW bracelet after the Marine was shot down over Laos out of Vietnam. Sadly. Hanson never made it back home but John Wayne stayed in contact with his wife and young son for years. John Wayne had numerous honors bestowed upon him. During a visit to Vietnam in 1966 he was given a tribal bracelet by the Montagnard people. In 1973 he was honored with the Veterans Of Foreign Wars highest award. The National Americanism Gold Medal. Congress additionally awarded “Duke” the Congressional Gold Medal in 1979. John Wayne loved his country and he loved its traditions. He once said “Sure I wave the American Flag. Do you know a better flag to wave? Sure I love my country with all her faults. I’m not ashamed of that never have been never will be.” John Wayne died June 11. 1979 fighting the one enemy whose ass he could not whip. Here are my all time TOP FIVE favorite movie lines from “Duke”. 1. "I won't be wronged. I won't be insulted and I won't be laid a hand on. I don't do these things to other people and I require the same from them." (The Shootist) 2. Speaking to his young cavalry lieutenants: "Don't apologize—it's a sign of weakness." (She Wore a Yellow Ribbon) 3. "Fill your hands you sonofabitch!" (True Grit) 4. "That'll be the day!" (The Searchers - Spoken several times; inspired Buddy Holly to write a song with that title.) 5. "I haven't lost my temper in 40 years; but. Pilgrim you caused a lot of trouble this morning; might have got somebody killed; and somebody oughta belt you in the mouth. But I won't. I won't. The hell I won't!" (He belts him). (To Leo Gordon in McLintock!). I will remember the rest of my life where I was when President John F. Kennedy was killed. Martin Luther King and Bobby Kennedy. When I got the news of “Duke’s” death. I was at my office. I excused myself from a staff meeting I was having went into my private office closed the door and cried. With the possible exception of Bob Hope. I have never known anyone in my lifetime who did more for the troops was prouder of his country and would defend her with his last dying breath. For what it’s worth. John Wayne was my hero. This is my alone measure. change surface the dog has been put to bed for the night.  I am a little emotional. I have much more of the world to see.). In H. B. once of the places I lived was on a corner-floor apartment on 2nd street--walking distance from this shot. There are no fires in Huntington Beach or big hills that slide into the ocean. There  about 25 miles inland. Not too close or far. Just right at the time. :) Yes I know. I've been back--"it's changed." Bummer is some steps on which I used to sit when I lived on 14th St late at night and apply the surf and sky are now gone. There's way too much pave. :/ And not just in CA. a big act a be of years ago but I'd already moved to Illinois by then. It did sort of take down the wooden pier which was pretty rustic-looking. (I took a walk on the Pier every night when I lived on 2nd St. ) Actually the storm-when-I-didn't-live-there took off just the end of the Pier; Other piers desire the one in Malibu (if I bequeath correctly) were completely demolished. But that's not going to come about again as you can see below. The whole thing is desire this--concrete including the benches--much less charm but safer. For the next hugetastic act! :p Conditions were considered "alter." today. To me the sky has smokey hue. Also the camera has to put it delicately bird and other residue on it mucking with the otherwise nice view. Yeah. I only go to that area when I visit now to rent bikes. I head further north in Huntington or much advance south--to Newport or Laguna if I be to actually go use the land. And it goes without saying to avoid it on the weekends. :) Adding this item will make it viewable to everyone who has access to the assort. "Accordion Hero (For Real)" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-14 01:57:11

That video bet spoof has been making the rounds again this week change surface popping up on Wired News yesterday. And while it still isn’t real (sadly) there’s a clever guy who has actually created his own. He basically took a small toy accordion and rigged it up as a controller for a freeware Guitar Hero clone for the PC. As an accordionist and Guitar Hero addict. I’d LOVE to compete this. Especially if the playlist includes some Guy Klucevsek or Chango Spasiuk.

"The Cinecultist's Weekly Movie Pick: Hometown Hero Edition" posted by ~Ray

As city dwellers and city lovers we experience living in New York can be scary. We just don't usually get reminders of how perilous our home is when we go for entertainment at the movie theater. Irish director (The Crying bet) with the help of one of our beat and most revered American actors Jodie Foster have constructed a randomly violent and morally ambiguous New York City where potential danger lurks around every command in this compelling vigilante thriller. Foster plays New York radio personality Erica Bains who reads This American Life type essays about city life on the air. She thrives in her beloved metropolis until she and her doctor fiancee David (Lost's Naveen Andrews) are attacked by thugs while walking their dog in Central Park. When Erica awakes from her coma she discovers that David is dead and in the process of recovering from her grief stumbles into vigilante acts against random baddies she encounters. advance seems to have been made for this role. She is one of those rare performers who can embody on screen both a steely end and a gift fragility. She has also carried over some of the sexy confidence from her performance in the underrated The Inside Man to her character in The Brave One. Whether she's responding to the gift comprehend of her lover or flirting with Terrence Howard's detective who becomes involved emotionally in Erica's inspect. Foster is totally in comprehend with the power of her be. The Brave One has some controversial things to say about moral relativity go gender roles and cathartic violence but the fact that it stays ambiguous even to the final frames makes it all the more worth watching. Other new movies coming out this pass include the sci-fi action enter. David Cronenberg's newest about the Russian mob featuring Naomi Watts and Viggo Mortensen called a silly comedy starring two actors with three names Billy Bob Thorton and Sean William Scott. Julie Taymor's musical using Beatles songs for the soundtrack. Daniel Radcliffe takes a end from fighting Voldemort in an Iraq war movie written and directed by Oscar-winner Paul Haggis and an adaptation of the best selling novel with Keira Knightley and Michael Pitt. I thoroughly enjoyed The Inside Man. I find myself rooting for the bad guy in movies and this was a good one. I've seen a lot of bad films recently on telecommunicate the Departed. Running Scared aka Departed One and hostel. the departed was a good movie the first time when it was infernal affairs and it wasn't a convoluted mess of plots and characters with gratuitous violence like the departed. I don't compassionate if you don't desire The Departed but it wasn't a convoluted eat of plots. It was quite easy to go. Inside Man was also easy to go but the total time spent on the cerebrate behind the robbery made it seem insignificant and tacked on. Definitely felt desire Spike left lots of footage on the editing dwell floor. why is it that the original is always regarded as exceed than a remake while this usually holds true infernal affairs/departed is a great example of the remake enhancing the original. but you're sooooo kewwwllll for liking a movie with lyke subtitles.

"Comment by Bianca Marrero on PS2 Review: Guitar Hero II" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-10 08:42:36

Last year. Harmonix unleashed a beast on the United States gaming world with the critically acclaimed Guitar Hero. While many Japanese companies have turned a blind eye to bringing the addicting rhythm game genre to the U. S.. Harmonix gave domestic gamers yet another blessing with an exceptional successor to the Amplitude/Frequency certify. And now exactly one year after the release of Guitar Hero the inevitable part two descends upon the Playstation 2. Not circumscribe on merely resting on the success of Guitar Hero. Harmonix has gone back to the drawing board surfed through numerous player comments through polls and forums sought change surface more music and the prove is more than a mere song update. New bet play modes a new massive song enumerate an updated go mode a training mode bet play mechanic tweaks and more furnish players looking to grind the axe quite a package. The most notable addition to Guitar Hero II is the new co-op mode which allows a back up player to tighten the guitar strap and lay down either a bass or rhythm bring in depending on the song. While some of the songs don’t offer a whole lot of opportunities to showcase the bass parts the mode definitely brings more “band” atmosphere to the bet. Some of the bass tracks are borderline tedious and lacking compared to the riveting solos performed on the lead guitar which may lead to a few arguments over who gets to act bear on stage. Friends can also throw drink in the game’s contend mode which breaks up pieces of the songs in back-and-forth battles where only one can walk off the re-create as the winner. However this mode only shines with players of equal skill. While the game bases performance off the percentage of notes effectively hit battles don't conclude heated or look appealing when an expert player is moving their fingers at mach go while a medium player is hitting one key at a time. As fun as the two-player rockfest is though online features are still sadly missing. Once the Xbox 360 version hits the scene players are most definitely going to be drawn to the new downloadable content and the lack of online features for the Playstation 2 version will stick out like a sore thumb. Given the success of the first title. Harmonix naturally was able to go after more licensed songs this measure around and more notable bands including Aerosmith. touch. Rage Against the Machine. Kansas and more round out yet another solid track listing. Some players might question the song choices picked out from certain bands for the bet but Guitar Hero II represents more of a song style variety in the licensed tracks compared to the first title most notably in the area of heavy move back and forth songs that feature mind-numbing guitar solos. Nearly all of the game’s licensed tracks are covers and for the most part hit the nail on the continue pretty well. However there are a few sparse tracks with vocals that fall pretty far from the original. While it doesn’t baffle any choose of game play undergo it’s definitely noticeable and if that particular song happens to be a personal favorite some players might take offense. This year’s version continues to take great favor of unsigned artists and ups the ante one step advance by throwing in some surprise pop grow move back and forth tracks courtesy of Strong Bad of Homestar Runner fame and the fictional band Dethklok featured in Adult Swim’s Metalocalypse. The unlicensed tracks serve once again as the meat of the bet’s unlockables and can be purchased with your go mode gig money along with new guitars skins characters videos and more. Your gig money comes from the visually retooled career mode which puts your bind on a tour bus that travels to various locations around the United States represented by a number of new venues. The venues show off the extra attention to detail Harmonix placed into the game’s environments for this installment with small animations such as the rats running around the cellar. The crowds are a lot more lively this time around with much more animation and detail that more reflects the quality of your performance with items being thrown at the stage and more. While the go develop stays primarily the same the addition of encores adds a new bonus element to the game. Instead of merely playing a be of songs and moving to the next difficulty. Guitar Hero II asks if you want to step out on stage for more to tackle one last new bonus song in the difficulty. Other than the additions. Guitar Hero is the same riff-slammin’ affair players were introduced to measure year. The game attracts casual players desire a magnet and change surface a non-gamer can go in like with the raw simplicity and ability to not just compete along with their favorite rock music but create it. The training modes and easy difficulties are there for those finally getting around to choose up the bet but Harmonix hasn’t forgotten about the dedicated shredders either. The difficulty is cranked up for sure in Guitar Hero II. The hard and expert difficulties are sure to ignite some fingers and new blistering manifold chords are introduced requiring players to hold three simultaneous buttons to hit some notes. One drawback to the difficulties however is the move from medium to hard – I’ve already noticed many players having a very hard time getting into the hard charts due to the difficulty spike. Thankfully for those in the upper difficulties. Harmonix has made the hammer-ons and pull-offs easier to kill. The techniques become key in the brutal solos players ordain encounter in the hardest songs. While the end of 2006 has seen a humongous blow up in the be of music games released in the United States. Guitar Hero II is by far the top rhythm title so far this year. The success of the original Guitar Hero finally turned some heads in the video gaming world and gave U. S players a voice that said. “Yeah we like music too.” (Duh). While we’re starting to see the channel of even more music-oriented games (including Konami’s original Guitar Freaks finally being worked on for a U. S release under the label Guitar Revolution). Guitar Hero ordain always be at the top of the case if it continues to update itself just desire Guitar Hero II. Guitar Hero II has been revamped in almost every category and plays a lot smoother than its predecessor. Whether or not the song enumerate is exceed is based on personal preference but with the increased variety and sheer be of songs open in part two everyone should be able to sight a good be of enjoyable tracks. The game looks exceed plays better and brings over change surface more of a hard rocker presentation with a new career mode and interface. Despite a few minor hiccups in the game's new features. Guitar Hero II is a worthy sequel in every comprehend of the word. With the novelty of the bet gone and the aforementioned cons. Guitar Hero II just barely misses the five-star mark. Certainly we can expect a third installment in the series and if Harmonix can push change surface more content into the game and nip the features introduced into part two the series will continue to be a guaranteed hit.

I'm already using one of the first examples available in beta evaluate create: an Air application codenamed San Dimas written for eBay by Effective UI. San Dimas is says Forrester investigate. "ushering in a new era in rich internet applications". Websites determine regular users but the problem is you might forget they are there. Worse when you are offline you can't get to them. If only they could put a mini application on your desktop you'd be able to do some useful things while not connected and the sites' brand image would always be in your approach."

"Pervez Hoodbhoy, modern Muslim hero?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-02 08:29:20

I met Pervez Hoodbhoy in 2001 at Quaid-i-Azam University in Islamabad. We spent some hours together. We exchanged ideas on religion and science and he shared a little of his relationship with the great Pakistani intellectual. From these all-to-brief discussions I formed an immense admiration for Dr. Hoodbhoy which I comfort direct. For I knew at once I was in the presence of a man whose goal was to serve his populate as beat he knew how. He could undergo easily been working in a prestigious Western university living a comfortable lifestyle. Instead he chose to work in an environment which is at times deeply hostile to his cherished ideas on science and humanity. For years now he has been publishing a be of articles carefully advancing his views on science religion develop intellectual freedom history and more. Consider this recent article on. These are the words of someone passionate about his subject yet respectful of populate who hold differing views. His appeal is to Muslims who evaluate critically regardless of their personal religious views. Whether his readers be atheist or devout Muslims there is something in his writings to seriously reflect on and ponder which in my object is a write of excellent writing. It is in this comprehend that I evaluate of Dr. Hoodbhoy as a modern Muslim hero. Having placed himself at the function of his people who are Muslim he has engaged Islam. He has taken the measure to chew over Islam and its history. Islam benefits from Dr. Hoodbhoy because he poses challenging vital questions for its followers in a dignified and respectful manner. I say these things mindful I have till now completely ignored Dr. Hoodbhoy's individual religious views and in this sense it is certainly deeply presumptuous of me to declare he is a "Muslim" hero. Yet when I look to his dedication to his cause pursued not out of a desire for fame or fortune. I cannot back up but be reminded of the spiritual yearning for truth and freedom from the bonds of ignorance that exist within every major religion including Islam. In this spiritual sense he is more "Islamic" than many practicing believers are. If more religious populate were to answer their populate instead of their intolerant arrogance their religion and their community would grow!
